Thread: Truck wont start

  1. #1
    Hi guys,
Had a weird thing happen to me tonight. It has happened to me before, but i figured it was the electrical gremlins again. I just got home and shut the truck off. Went to move my truck no more than 30 seconds later and it wouldnt start or do anything. I turn the key and get nothing. I can hear the fuel pump turning on and the standard dash lights and thats it. It wont crank over or anything. Has anyone else had an issue like this with their truck(s)? The battery is an optima that is pretty new and i have no issues with the charging system. ANY ideas would help.

    Thanks,

    Matt

Starter is on the fritz it sounds like. I would check and clean the battery cable connections first, then the main power cable to the starter to be sure it's tight on both ends. Turn on the headlights and have someone watch them as you try to start the truck. If they dim, it's your battery. If they stay bright, it's your starter or battery cables most likely. I do remember a service bulletin about defective ignition switches in some vehicles but I am not sure which ones.

    Dumb question but....

Automatic transmission....are you in park or neutral? Hold the key in the start position as you drag the shifter through the gear selections slowly to check for a defective switch in the transmission selector on the trasmission.

Manual transmission....do you have the clutch depressed? Is the clutch switch good?
