Thread: Not truck related but amusing at least.

Not truck related but amusing at least.

My little 97 honda accord automatic with 163k miles on it has been acting up. On downshift acceleration it will rev 1000 rpms and then catch the gear. When the trans is cold it will slip 5 or 6 hundred rpms and then catch a gear. When it warms up it doesn't slip on shifts other than the downshift from 3to 2 or 2 to 1 not exactly sure which gear it does it in.
Today it does this weird thing as if the torque converter is locking and unlocking. Not sure really what it is. What do you guys think? It recently was serviced with honda fluid and is not low on fluid.

does it shift normal if you shift it manually?

Mine used to do something similar...i threw 1/2 a lucas in it, and it went away. Only did it when it was cold. Not sure what caused it. But it drove fine if you shifted it manually...I'm assuming it was a shift solenoid.

after actually watching videos...does it FEEL like the rpms are changing, or is the tach just dancing? Doesn't seem like the car is jerking/accelerating oddly. Mine wasn't very smooth. Might just have a bad tach signal.

It does vibrate somewhat. I don't think it is the tach signal cause I felt it and then looked at the tach. Lucas oil huh. I might try that. I want this thing to hold out for a bit longer before I put a transmission in it.

that lucas crap is just a temporary bandaid and will only make things worse in the long run!!
if you actually want it to last then i wouldnt suggest that stuff at all, but if you just need to make sure youll be able to get to work tomorrow then it might help

I know it won't last much longer. Makes me mad. 3500 for it. I have put at least 600 in brakes all the way around ,tune up and a stinking axle. replaced bearings when we did the brakes. $50 to have the bearings pressed out and new ones pressed in. 2 months later they were bad already. Anther 50$ . I fixed that problem though. I bought a 150 dollar press.

There is a cable that goes from the throttle to the trans. I believe it is a transmission line pressure control. This cable has a lot to do with how the converter clutch locks up. Usually a small adjustment to this cable makes a big difference. Sometimes just a half turn (effectively making the cable shorter by a half turn) can fix a converter clutch lock up problem. Your trans may need more.

To adjust this cable properly you really need access to a shop manual. If you search around you can probably find a download for the full shop manual for that Honda. I have the full shop manual for that car that I downloaded online.

Maybe this will help you out. This is from the shop manual. You will probably have to go shorter than the "syncronized point". This may or may not fix your transmission problems. Good Luck.

    Inspection and adjustment...

Edit: These didn't come out very clear. If you can't read them let me know and I'll try again.

Thanks I appreciate it. I am going to take a look at doing this tomorrow. Hopefully it will make it act right.

So, did the cable adjustment help?
