Thread: Broken Balancer!

    Broken Balancer!

I've attached a few pictures and tried beating, banging, snatching, and a BIG air hammer on the pulley pushing away from the motor... Is there another way to remove a balancer with a broken pull point for the 3 jaw puller? I have the actual GM puller and installer from the dealership.

turn the puller hooks around and grab the outside of the pulley also you can pull it from the inner tabs, not the ones near the crank but along the outer edge, its hard to explain in words if i was there id say right here the balancer has 3 inner tabs and 3 outer tabs those are the ones im talking about. also you can get a monster puller, the kind they use on heavy eqmnt. and pumps and just grab the entire outside of the pulley and itll come off.

when using the puller incorrectly it is possible to break the tabs off. I put a 6" long 3/8" socket extension in the threaded hole and push against it. The balancer has a flange on the front of it that many have tried to push against to pull the pulley off, resulting in broken pulley or puller.

Thats the first thing i tried! the puller wont stay hooked because when you put tension on it.. the arms just collapse to the inside... Physics takes over.. and you can't defy physics... and i don't have the little flats inside like most do.. i have 2 balancers here with the flats cut on the inside of the balancer. this broken one doesn't have them. its a 1999 model balancer

autozone has a 'chrysler harmonic balancer puller' tool that I used. I would rent that and a 5-ton 3 jaw puller, you should be able to grab the outside of the pulley with it. If not you might have to wrap a chain around the pulley and use the puller on the chain instead of the pulley.
