    4L80E possibly catastrophic problem ?????

so i pulled my 80e out to put in my 3200 converter i recently bought, i dropped my trans put the converter in put the trans back up hooked everthing up the same way it was, had to shim the verter, amd change flexplates cus the snout on the verter was to big around for my stock 5.3 flexplate with the spacer in there. well now the trans whines pretty loud, if i take off slowly it wont do it but if i give it some gas it whines thru 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd and out on the highway you can barely hear it, it shifts fine, even stalls fine but im wondering if any of you guys have had this issue or know what it could be. possibly to much fluid maybe or not enough???? front pump maybe but would it still drive fine??? i went and did a WOT on it and everything is fine just whines like a damn mountain motor. any ideas before i drive 8 hours to san antonio in 2 days.

did you prefill the convertor? Have you checked the fluid level? I'm assuming you know the correct procedure for checking trans fluid levels.

i didnt prefill it but did put fluid in it, and the dipstick is saying its level but when i hammered on it, im pretty sure it blew some trans fluid out cus the famous cloudy smoke screen was behind the truck, i had to kind of ninja rig the dipstick tube you'd hafta see it would to much fluid cause the whine????

sounds like the converter is low on fluid, i'm pretty sure they are built like a hydraulic vane style pump and if thats the case it'll be super noisy with low fluid just like a p/s pump without enough fluid only louder

thats exactly what it sounds like i kept checking the PS fluids, i thought the converter pumps up all the fluid it needs as soon as you turn the truck over???? if not will it eventually pump up the fluid??

no my friend it sounds like you have cavitation. which means a huge air bubble trapped in the converter, and that will burn it up and cause alot of wear

the main pump is supposed to fill the convertor, I'm sure. Just cycle the shift selector through the ranges and refill the trans until it stabilizes.

Converter fills with pump rotation as you said. I see no reason to pull the trans back out to make sure the converter is full. You may need to pull it for some other reason.
