yeah, its a Gen3 if its a 5.3L engine and the four exhaust ports are evenly spaced and it has the plastic intake. There may have been some Gen1s engines vehicles built in Mexico at that time but that one is undoubtedly a Gen3.

An old school is Gen I, only the suck LT1/LT4 is Gen II. Gen III is almost everything after. Gen IV is almost Gen III but better.

If the oil pressure switch is screwed directly into the block its gen3 and if its screwed into the valley cover its gen4. The crankshaft sensor located just above the starter, black is Gen3 and Grey is Gen4. If the timing sensor is located at the back of the block, on the centerline of the cam then its Gen3, if on the front timing cover then Gen4. If the PCM has a PCM and TCM(two seperate modules), Gen4. Gen3 PCM will have two long skinny connecters about 3/4" wide and the wire terminal covers will be blue and red or blue and green. Blue and red Gen3 PCMs are pretty much 2002 and older while blue and green are 2003 and newer.

The VIN number for the truck the engine and tranny came out of appears as 1GENC1........ I know we had talked about it being a Gen3 but the vin says 1Gen does this mean anything?
