I noticed on the intro to that it said the oil pumps randomly die. What happens to the oil pumps?

the bypass valve sticks open and all the oil dumps back into the engine rather than through the oil passages.

Is that a result of the LS6 valley plate, or is it just another mysterious catastrophe like ol' #7 ??

It is what happens when you have an aluminum oil pump body and steel gerotor inside it, along with a steel pressure regulator plunger inside the aluminum body.

I've only ever had it happen on engine startup, not while driving. Doesn't hurt anything as long as it doesn't idle too long (10-15 seconds max) and you don't rev it up.

How do you know when it happens? Just watch you oil pressure gauge?

That and the DIC displays "Check Engine Oil Pressure" in big black/yellow letters. Pretty hard to miss.
