why wouldn't it work? Because you didn't have an LS2 cam gear?

You are correct. I also did not think to order the 3 bolt cam instead i ordered the new ls3 single bolt cam. Thus i could not use the LS2 cam gear.

Do you have a pic of the LS3 cam gear? I ask because I wonder if it has the cam timing phaser cast into the front of it the same as an LS2 cam gear.

I dont have a picture of it as the motor is put together on the front but to answer your question it is yes. It is cast into the front.
