I would go a bit further, and start the tear-down, but I promised my 4 yr old that I'd have Christmas lights up & around today. Plus, my 2 yr old OFFICIALLY made TWO today. Agree it sounds like a lifter bouncing off the cam. Bent pushrod or collapsed lifter?

Bent pushrod was my first thought also.

Could also be a cracked flywheel. Check the material between the bolt holes at the crank center.

Not a bent pushrod. Rockers are solid. Some of posted opinions of bottom-end.
