Thread: Ls1 hotcam in a 5.3?

1. #1
Hey i was wondering if i overcammed my truck. I put an ls1 hotcam in my 5.3 and the timing is off a little, the number 1 and 8 cylinders are barely firing, im hoping i will fix this with the diablo tuner coming in the mail that i had re tuned. But anyways does anyone have input, what do you think about this cam?

i don't think theres anyway a 218/227 .525/.525 112 will over cam a 5.3 or cause ingnition problems.

You can't tell if a gen3 engine is just barely firing by pulling plug wires. The gen3 will purr like a kitten on 4 cylinders. You don't want to know how I know that. What makes you think its not hitting on those two cylinders? Have you done a leakdown or compression test on those holes?

I ran a 218/228 (Futral) with no issues - so, no, it's not overcamming your engine. Try what Greg said ^^^^

yeah did the compression everything is fine, and it does purr but it's on the low side of power ( i lose to my friends v6 dakota) Pretty bad...i did the water spray test and spayed water on the exhaust manifold and those two took longer to evaporate telling me no hot gasses not firing, plus i took it to extreme performance here in phoenix specializing in that block style (mostly corvettes with the ls1's and stuff) and the hooked it to there computer and it reads a misfire every rotation on those...and i have all kinds of codes which is normal w/ a cam but some i dont think are like the injector trouble code, idk i still didn't get my tuner but im hopeing that will fix it. i do also know that my low end is gone so to regain that what do you suggest (TC, Gears?) would comp roller rockers help on the low end too because im waiting on my valve cover spacers. What do you think?

You need NelsonPerformance to tune your truck. I would at least call, email or PM Dr Nelson.

Sounds like you have issues with the fuel injectors, coil packs or spark plugs.

i actually already ordered my tuner, the diablo because i got a deal, but ill have to check the injectors because the spark was fine. i already tested that. one front one had the wires riped out but i fixed that but the back one was running fine, ill have extreme performance look at it. Thanks for everyones help! But again what do you think about my low end, it is gone so to regain that what do you suggest (TC, Gears?) would comp roller rockers help on the low end too because im waiting on my valve cover spacers. Get a stall convertor to match your cam. It's like slipping the clutch to get the engine up to an RPM it can operate at well.
