I have access to either engine cheap through a friend. Problem is they are sitting on the floor taken out of vehicles.

As I understand it the blocks are the same visually, what is the best way to determine what engine is what if you just have it sitting on a crate?

What numbers? 4.8/5.3 are on both blocks. I've tried to find the differences when I had to swap my old Kon's 5.3L out (hole in block) with a 4.8L longblock I got from a friend for $150, but had no luck... of course, i really didn't give it much effort either. Same bore, different stroke between those two motors. Won't notice the 10hp difference, but the 25 - 30 ft/lbs difference will be noticeable.

Those two engines interchange without any issues. Everything interchanges. The only sure way to check the size of the engine is to measure the stroke distance of the piston. Should be about 3-5/8"

I knew they interchanged, just wanted to make sure I bought the bigger one as I plan to tow with it.

The motors are all pulled from trucks, there are several available but we know most are probably the 4.8's.

So the only real way is to pull them apart or vin #?

and different connecting rods... longer than 5.3/5.7/6.0 (92mm stroke) to compensate for the
shorter stroke of the 4.8 crankshaft (83mm stroke) and use the same pistons.
