Thread: Air Bag Sensor

  1. #1

Tonight I've been working on taking out my seats, the only problem is that there is an air bag sensor under my drivers seat that has a wire running to my seat. i was wondering how to take the seat out without looking like a dumbass and blowing the airbags.

You sure its an airbag module? I think thats the EDR (BlackBox) The wire for seatbelt data from what I was told... I could be off here though.

disconnecting the battery is fine. Just remember the EDR, SDM the piece your asking about. Stores power for 10 mins after battery disconnect. So wait at least 15 min+ before tampering with it.

Looks like he has it handled, But just to clarify. Its a Event Data Recorder AKA Sensing & Diagnostic Module. Like the little black box on airplanes. To best explain it... It has an accelerometer and when its tripped it records RPM,TPS,MPH,Braking,Seatbelt on/off. Everything a crash investigator needs to know. If its tripped and your airags dont deploy, The data is erased after 250 ignition cycles. We all have them in are trucks. Some are under the seat, Under the center console or behind the dash. There easy to identify. It has a big yellow sticker. CAUTION AIRBAG SENSOR!!

Problem with just pulling the airbag fuse is the same as just disconnecting the battery. The SDM is a data recorder but also controler that can store energy to deploy the air bag 10 mins after the battery or even the airbag fuse is pulled. There is a long sequence to service them... Battery,Fuse and all service loops... Wait 10 mins. You can short but it and just dissconect the battery and wait 10 mins. There will be no way the airag can deploy.

We had a tech 3 years ago that was removing the stearing wheel on a benz. He disconnected the battery and pulled the fuse. The airbag deployed and broke his jaw. So im alittle anal when it comes to airbags. They scare me now

That's freakin cool! I had no idea that we have a black box recorder. It's kinda like a Catch-22. You need for the authorities to know all the information of an accident, but then again, sometimes you don't want the authorities to know all the info...
