Background: I was a diesel driver for the last few trucks, and as you know, the HP gods have been smiling on the diesel guys these last few years. They can pretty much have their way with a stock gas truck. My current truck is about as plain a sleeper as you can find; plain white, stock tires, no visible mods. All stock right now except for the tune.
Coming home today, as I pulled away from a right turn, I look in the rear view and see another GMC pull away from the light behind me... he's getting on it pretty hard, pulling away from all the other traffic at the light. So I play cool, set the cruise at about 10 over the limit (pretty typical speed for this road). He passes me up doing about 10 faster than me, then slows about 100 yards ahead. We're on!
So we cruise on for a couple of miles, negotiate one light without stopping, and as he zips though a couple of tight spots in traffic, I'm right with him- so he knows I'm there. Then I catch an opening in traffic and slip by him. Traffic clears after that, and he settles down on my rear quarter. All we need now is a light.
Finally another couple miles down the road we get one. Six lanes and I'm on the left, he's on my right. On the green reaction time is real close. Neither of us power braked (we're being sneaky, right?). He gets me by half a length in the intersection -gotta respect that diesel torque- but by 100 feet I've reeled him back in and after that it's all me, getting further away up to about 80, where I get out of it.
He hangs back, and as luck would have it we catch the next light too. This time I'm on the right because I've got a turn coming, and he's in the center again. I've got his measure now, and lots of times guys don't want two spankings in a row, so I wait him out. Well, he wants some more, as he nails it from the green. With the reaction advantage, he gets a length this time. It takes me just past the 1-2 shift to pull even, and then I'm going away after that.
Had to turn off at the next light, so that was the end of that little road rally. Felt good to show the diesel guys they can't always have it their way.
