God I love that Topic Title....lol

Being 45 and of the first gen era I didn't realize what I was getting into when my buddy talked me into buying a 97 corvette LS1 for my 99 4.8 4x4 Silverado. I bought Will Handzel's LS1 book and that helped a bit but I still have a few dumb ass questions that I hope you guys won't mind if I ask over the course of this swap.

Here's what I've managed to find out so far... wiring harness will work, ECM will have to be reflashed, Intake and throttle body will work if I go with electric fans. I'll have to use the cable throttle body from the 4.8....85mm is cool anyway. Swap out oil pan for 4.8....How'm I doing so far? Pretty much stuck with the 4l60e tranny being a 4x4. Swapping out the transfer case and shafts are not in the budget right now.
I did want to know about this LS6 cam and head swap...any comments? Is it really worth the cash? I was kind of thinking of throwing on the 4.8 heads, same valves just a smaller vol.(cc) Might push the comp over 11 tho and I wasnt' going to do the pistons...comments?

Thanks for having me.

The long block will swap out 100%. The PCM just needs to be adjusted for the larger engine. Use all the parts off the old 4.8 on the LS1. Pull your balancer off and press it onto the LS1 engine and use a new bolt, tighten per the instructions in the Hanzel book. I think the 4.8 heads on the LS1 will be a big mistake. Use the stock setup until you can afford some really nice heads, maybe a set of ARPs or something like that. Contact Allen at NelsonPerformance.com and he can send you a tuned PCM for your application. The later model LS6 cam is nice but will require a valve spring update. Use your water pump and fan from the 4.8L engine and you don't have to mess with electric fans, for now(until you want more power).

yea, I was reading the posts here about the hassles with the electric fans....I may want to reconsider that one. I'm going to look into it a little more.

Welcome to the site!

Fans aren't really that big of a problem. You can either get a new set-up like Flex-a-lite or Perma-Cool, or you can go to a junk yard (or Ebay) and get some e-fans off a F-body (Camaro or T/A). And since you are doing a Nelson PCM, you can buy his fan harness. That way everything is plug-n-play. The fans will be set to come on at a specific temp by the new PCM. Flex-a-lite comes with a temp control module that does the same thing, but you set the temp. It comes on at 60% capacity 10 degrees before the thermostat opens, and it comes on at 100% when the stat opens and the system is recirculating. I installed my Flex-a-lite set-up myself and it went well.

As for the heads, the 4.8's are a little small for now. Like RedHeartbeat said, save up for some nice ARP, Dart or MTI LS1 heads. Have them port and polished with something like 2.02 / 1.60 valves, 1.7:1 Jesel rockers, and a cam. When you do the heads/block, you have to also do new head/block bolts because they fit-to-torque specs and can only be used once.

But even then, you kinda have to decide if you are staying N/A or boosted. Your long term wants/desires depend on how you build the motor.

Any way you look at it, we will try to help you out the best we can!
