Is there a noticable difference between the power of a 5.3 and 6.0? Night and day difference or just a small differnce?
very noticeable, in an Escalade anyway but thats the LQ9
i think its the tq that the 6.0 is able to make that is what seals the deal
it would probably be equivalent to a 5.3 with a tune vs a 5.3 without.
If you need a motor, might as well...but if your 5.3 is running strong, i don't see a need. The time/money could go elsewhere.
Yeah 325 ft lbs compared to 370 is a decent difference
lmao yes about 4mpg !!!! :) ..but soon as you mod them the gains are much more with a 6.0 other then that save your wallet
Gas mileage isnt really a problem....if thats what your getting at. Im just looking for a 13 sec 1/4.
Throw a 150 shot on your 5.3 and call it good. I'm there.
Im Going From 4.8 To 6.2,,ill Let You Know The Difference Soon
Or I could get an lq4 with a torquer v2 cam and a 150 shot....lol
i was kidding... I just wouldnt take out a 5.3 in a stock truck and drop in a stock 6.0 and expect alot .... but gains are great with tune,headers,camshaft.... cubic inch is allways king.... put a 232/236 in there while you have it out
If you have unlimited funds, then yes, go 6.0
If you only have...say 2k...i'd spend it on other stuff.
i knew whatcha meant, lol i really dont give a hoot about my wallet is what i was getting at ;)
its gonna take dollars in whatever you wanna do!!! i get tired of reading this budget crap, i started the same way and finally through the budget out the freaking window lmao!!!
I have a tune and headers and such already. Will my 5.3 headers be sufficent? are they the same? and I plan on going with a Texas Speed Torquer 2 232/234 .595/.598 Camshaft before I swap engines
nice choice of cam, yes your headers will work on a 6.0, you'll be surprised how fast it would be with headers,tune,stall,gears and well your normal bolt ons, i used the same dynatech headers on my 5.3 as i do on the motor i run now, well until i went with the kooks 1 7/8 into 2 inch
Will I need injectors like you have? The cam listed above is close to yours right?
i honestly dont think i have alot of money in my 5.3 and it does pretty good, even against 6.0s with the same or more done to em......results not typical :lol:
If you run your existing injectors, you will either be at 99%-105% Duty cycle on them. They will help, but not noticeably. If you throw nitrous on there, then you will definitely need bigger injectors.
that's about like me going from the 4.3 to the 5.3
Or think of it this way.......
The old 3.8 V6 from Olds/Buick cars is almost the same as a 5.0 V8 with 2 fewer cylinders.
3.8 = .6333333 L per cylinder
5.0 = .625 L per cylinder
So, if you can imagine the difference between those 2 motors, that's roughly the difference an extra 1.2L makes. Not exactly, mind you, just a point for comparison.
The 1.2L difference in going from a V6 to a V8 in my comparison would actually be a bit less dramatic than a 1.2L larger V8......because in the V6 to V8 scenario, part of the HP increase will also be absorbed by the larger rotating mass of the extra 2 cylinders. You will probably add rotating mass with a larger V8 as well (larger pistons), but not as much as 2 whole extra cylinders' worth. One way to get around, or at least somewhat mitigate the increased rotating mass issue is to use lightweight forged pistons in the larger motor. That of course requires rebalancing of the whole rotating assembly, yadda yadda yadda.
If you are only looking for a 13 you can keep what you have and mod it, BUT like everyone once you get to a goal you will set another... So your 13 will become a 12... and so on. I vote save your wallet later down the road and go 6.0 I still wish I did!
im in the same boat, im working on getting a 2004 lq9 6.0 out of a ss truck with 44k miles. trying to get it for $1200. should be a nice step up from the 5.3 maybe get a nice set of l92 heads and raunchy cam with a decent shot of nitrous. with a 6 speed manual if i cant destroy all of 3rd gear and some of 4th with my 20's ill be very surprised. ill keep you posted.
going from a stock cammed 5.3 to a stock cammed 5.7 i went from 13.88 to 13.26.
yes you will feel a difference.
I went from a 4.8 to LQ9 so I can crime in. Don't let anyone tell you the difference is huge, it's not. Basically the 6.0 feels like the amount of power that should have come stock. The nicest difference for me was highway cruising power. The ability to go up any hill without dropping out of OD is nice. a 5.3 in a reg cab is probably very similar to the feel of a 6.0 in an ext. cab such as mine. The 5.3 is a very capable engine, as many have proven. That being said, I'm biased, and I would do the 6.0 swap :dancenana:
Im going to go with an lq4 and the torquer cam mentioned. Then if I need more power down the raod I can boost or spray.
FWIW my almost stock LQ4 is nearly 100% on injector duty cycle.
Thanks for the heads up Nate.
