I'd start with the sending unit. Find someone with a scanner and verify the reading going to the PCM so you can determine for sure if its not just a bad gauge cluster.
yeah the areoforce reads what the sending unit puts out...so cluster is ruled out

I would not drive it at all until I knew if there was an electrical problem or a mechanical problem. No doubt. Besides, it was making noise, right? That never gets better on it's own.
