when i hear the word "tune" i think of adjusting the timing and trying different jets in my carb. but all that is computer controlled now, right? so "tuning" requires changing what the computer tells the engine to do?

Yes
and this can be done via engine management software i presume?
Softwares such as EFI-Live and HPTUNERS can accomplish your needs. There are many companies that can provide you with a tried and proven tuned PCM to swap out with your factory PCM. NelsonPerformance(site sponsor) and many other companies will provide a tuning service for you without the expense of buying the software or having to deal with the learning curve. NP provides lifetime updates to the tune(within reason). I understand EFI-Live now has a self tuning application for their software. We've been waiting about 3 years for HPTUNERS to release a new improved version.
