I already know one of the many suggestioins that I'm going to get, "THE ALLEN TUNE WILL FIX IT!!!". I'm sure it will, but that's not in the buget right now. To date all I have done is installed a K&N FIP kit and descreened the MAS. Before I did anything I had to run 89 octane to avoid any pings when I got on it. Now with more air the 89 pings. What gives?

It pings only. Pray for no knocks!!!
I had an 01 Tahoe that did the same thing until I bought a Hypertech Programmer for it. Once I set it for 87 octane the pings went away.

I would try the octane boost for now. seeing how you said funds are short right now.
if it comes done to it, you may need to run higher octane gas if you dont want tit to ping.
    I run 93.
if I run anything less it will ping also.
but I have other things causing that problem

When we bought the '04 Tahoe I contacted Hypertech to see if I could send them the programmer to swap it for one for the '04. I asked the tech about this and he said something to the effect of all GM '01 v8's having the same problem. I wonder if Professor Allen knows anything about this.

If you still can put the MAF screen back in, removing it makes your truck run lean and that can cause ping. If you can't then you are right about Allen't tune. I removed mine then had to tune for it, and I don't think it gained anything. also have you done the TB bypass? How cold is the air the intake sees. Hot air can cause ping as well as low octane fuel.

What exactly is the throttle body bypass? I know there are two connections for coolant lines on the throttle body, do you just get a longer hose and run them between the other ends of these lines and skip the throttle body?

That's what I believe they are talking about. It's an old trick to block hot water from heating up the air charge going to the intake. Every little bit helps. I remember doing the same thing on my older holley intakes to keep the fuel charge cool. You will probably need an adapter to go from one size whole to the next smaller size.

You both are exactly right about the throttle body bypass, it heats up your TB. There are two different sized hoses connected to it so you can probally make something out of brass to adapt it. Mine uses other than stock hose so mine was easy to bypass.
