From what I remember reading of Hitmans posts, if you put a 145 amper on there you should be perfectly fine running efans and a decent stereo system.

yeah i remember that... but im not sure what factor the UD pulley would have... im almost sure it couldnt be a HUGE amount.... but under-powering can also damage electrical components..... kind of like underpowering a subwoofer damages it, i dont want to under power my alternator/truck

but i remember the same posts you do... thats why i asked to begin with

145 should be the minimum with e-fans & a system. If you go with UD pullies, then you need an overdrive pulley on the Alt.

You will also need a larger belt.

Exactamundo. Alternator charging is not that simple - just because you have a 145-amp alternator DOES NOT mean you get all 145-amps at idle; alternators are usually rated at cruise RPM (1500 to 2000 RPM) and switching to a larger capacity alternator may not get you any more current while the motor is idling.

GM makes two alternator cases - a small one, and a large one; get the larger one because it will deliver more power at idle (versus a small case 'high output' alternator, which will deliver nearly the same idle current).

Pulley - I recommend you increase the alt RPM to counter the new crank pulley; you need to know the old crank pulley size vs. the new crank pulley size to figure the percent reduction in RPM, then work the math backwards (using the alt pulley) to determine the new required alt pulley size. I.E. if your crank pulley is 10% underdrive, then you will want to make the new alt pulley smaller to achieve a 10% increase in speed. The numbers don't have to be exact, just make sure you will not be over-revving your new alternator at redline.

Since GM only makes a couple alternators, I would determine the new pulley size required and just start shopping at the wrecking yards; I would look at the luxury cars (the ones with lots of electrical options and low engine redlines) because they will have smaller alt pulleys than vehicles having high-rpm engines.

ok so since i dont ever get time to go to a scrap yard and look at teh alternators off wrecked newer vehicles im stuck with checking EBAY. ive found a few 145 amp alternators and a few 160 amp alternators (but they dont say they will fit) the 145's i have found were running roughly $85 and they showed a picture of the vehicle it came off of (supposedly)

are used ones worth it or should i just go ahead and shell out the 150 or so and get a new one... and if i get a new one should i go with a 160??

DAMNIT I WANT E-FANS INSTALLED AND I WANT THEM NOW
