My truck was orginally a 4.8 5 speed and I went to the LS1 with a 6 speed and it was a very easy conversion. You can use the hydraulic line from your current setup and it will plug into the slave cylinder on the 6 speed, you crossmember should fit perfect with no mods you will just need a shorter driveshaft and lower gears in the back.

I'm glad you did this. We've (Allen and I) been thinking about that exact swap for years and figured it would be a real easy swap. I always figured you could pick up a base model truck with a 4.8 and 5 speed for a good price and make a screaming hotrod truck out of it. Nice job!

I've got an 06 rclb and im thinking of doing a 6.0 6 speed conversion once the warranty is up. I think I have a good idea of the depth of the V6 to V8 swap, but I know nothing about putting a 6 speed in one. The truck right now has a 5 speed so all the pedals and lines are there, I'm just not sure if everything will hook up the same. I know it'll be a hard task to overtake but if I do my homework in the next 2 1/2 years I think I can get a good handle on it. If anyone has done a 6 speed converion or a 6 liter swap, please chime in with any comments or suggestions.

Put a T56 in it. They are a blast to drive,
I have a 5.3/T56 combo in a 92 fullsize.
You already have the hydraulics so that part is easy.
As stated above, Keisler makes a kit that will allow you to move the shifter forward and should make it possible to maintain a stock look on the inside.
I have their shifter relocation kit, and only had to trim about a 1/2 out of the original hole in the cab floor.

I agree, you will need lower rear gears. I have 4.56 in mine.

Good luck

Thanks again man, I figure ill have to do something to strengthen the rear end anyway, so gears will now be a must. How is your mileage with the 4.56's? I was thinking along the lines of a 3.90, or a 4.10.

im not sure ud lose that much, usually he most ud lose is 1-3 MPG on gear swaps. if u going with this setup, would gas mileage be a concern. i understand that everyone wants the best driveability possible, but for what u lose in gears u can make up for on other things(CAI, synthetics, etc...). i think ud definitely get around 16-20MPG easily. the way u drive will ultimately determine ur gas mileage, but thats a no brainer haha

very true, mileage is not the main concern, but it's still a concern. I like the fact that a GTO with a 6.0 gets 28 on the highway, power and mileage is the main driving force behind this idea. I did not know that the gears only hurt mileage that much, it may not be that big of a deal all said and done. Thanks man.

yeah no problem, ill try to find some posts to back it up, but ur not gonna be pulling the MPG down too bad. like i said its more the way u drive it after the mods r done thats will affect that. a lot of people get mods done and stomp on it all the time cuz its intrguing, but then they complain about gas mileage. the parts dont causes that huge of a gap, ur not gonna go form 20mpg to like 13 just by doing gears. itd be more of a change in ur driving habit that would cause the change.

EDIT: tired of looking through posts haha theres info on it just have to search and find them. i did find some posts in the t56 just hit the search button up top and type keywords liek "T56" and "gears" and ull be fine.

Honestly I am not exactly sure what kind of milage I am getting right now.
My speedo is still not calibrated correctly, and haven't had time to change it.
Also my truck is not a daily driver, just a toy, so I didn't assemble it with efficiency in mind.
It has a mild cam, and a tune from Allen.
I had in mind going with 4.10 but found an Eaton posi unit with 4.56 gears on Ebay, and bought them to try.
I'm glad I did.
For a daily driver, 4.10 would be fine, buy I would not go lower, just my opinion.

FYI I can run about 70mph in 6th at about 2000rpm with plenty of power left.

My original gears were 3.08 and when I switched to the 4.56 the seat of the pants difference was about as significant as changing from the original 4.3 to the 5.3.

Good luck

I am going to say don't even consider anything less than 4.56. I started out with factory 3.42 and then tried 4.11 but now have 4.56. With a 29" tire I can run about 80 at 2000 rpm's in 6th. I drove on a 750 mile trip one way and got 19.888 mpg running between 80 and 90 mph.

Is your truck a rcsb or an ecsb?

ps. Any pics of the interior?
