You need to first decide what your goals are for the truck and whether you want to go forced induction or stay NA. If you dont know yet, intake, catback and tune will net you some hp, increase driveability and possibly some mpg depending on your right foot. Once you decide more specific goals you can get into heads, cam, stall, gears etc. BTW, im just up the road from you in EP

Well i am currently deployed right now but i have a house in the NE. For NA power the first things i would do are boltons and tune. These will lay the ground work for later when u get into heads n cam. Do a cold air intake kit (or just get a tube or make one from pvc and modify the stock air box) long tube headers and catback exhaust (something free flowing like corsa or magnaflow) and custom tune. Stay away from hand helds, they generally suck compared to custom tunes. I had a friend tune mine with HPT, he will be back in EP around january. Later, for a 5.3 proven cams are something around 220 duration coupled with a yank or circle d 3k stall. 4.10 gears would b a great upgrade with those heavier rims as well. I went from 3.23s to 4.10s on 22s and it was the best mod i have done yet.
