question:how much hp does a stock 80e handle?it may be cheaper for me lol
Guys, the 80E is indescribably bad. It's expensive, it's heavy, it's NOT available in the salvage yards, it's inefficient, and worst of all, the ratios. Maybe ok for race-only, but nothing else. Seriously, it's just an evolution of a 1965 thing called a TH400. I've driven a 4L80E truck, it was even a 454 with 4.10:1 axle, first gear was still intolerably tall. Now, TCI does offer a 2.97:1 first, but it's over $900, NOT including installation, and it still doesn't fix fourth.
If the 60E's ( 700R-4's ) 3.059:1 first wasn't an improvement over the TH400 / 4L80E 2.482:1 first, then how do you explain the Allison 1000 using a 3.10:1 first, and the new 6L80E using a 4.027:1 first?
Strength matters, but NOT MORE than ratios.
80E's are very abundant in recycle centers
They are not any more expensive than 60E's
They only weight a 100lbs or so more than a 60E
And they are a ton stronger!
A stock 80E will handle more power and abuse then the best Built 60/65/70E out there. The gearing seems like it would be beneficial for towing since that's what GM uses in most of their light duty towing packages. Never seen a 60E in any of the 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. Maybe Im missing something here.
I had a fully built *** level 1 billion 70E and it lasted a whole 2 weeks behind 500rwhp. What a joke!!!
After having an FLT and switching to an 80 I don't think I can really agree with either the seriously bad comment or the ratios matering more than strength comments. I agree with Jon's comments above. And unless you wanna swap trans stuff out every month or so, strength is certainly at least a big of a player as ratios. It may be an apples to oranges comparison however as most people on here seem more concerned with straigh-line performance versus towing issues.

So you spent all the time and money swapping a 14 bolt axle into a v6 truck so you could tow more. Now you're going to spend more money to buy a built trans, and then swap a 6.0 in it. You SHOULD have sold the 1/2 ton and bought a 3/4 ton and been done with it. You chose the hard way of doing things, taking a 1/2 ton and making it a 3/4 ton with a 1/2 ton frame...LOL

I have had 2 flts. 1 level 5 that I broke a billet shaft in.I wish I had went 4l80 to begin with. It would have been worth the extra money. It would also still be alive. My new level 5 4l85E from FLT is awesome.

Guys I dunno why you're telling this ruhtard to put an 80e in it. Look at his other thread, it's taken a year for a bolt in rear end swap, an 80e isn't a direct replacement, can you imagine how long the truck would be down? DECADES.
You wanna tow and not bitch about ratios and want something bulletproof? NV4500. But then converting the truck to a 5speed would take about 300 years.
