Spike the PCM and have to by a new one. Spike the generator and have to buy a new one. Possibly repeat this for every Class2 module and you'll get the idea. Some EBCM's are $1000. What happens when loaded contacts are separated? Lightening...that's what. It's called points. Points used to be in distributors to fire the spark plugs. It might not happen every time but why take the risk? Besides, the ECM, etc. needs constant power supply to operate properly...and most alternators are PCM controlled.

Testing the amperage output of the alternator is good for measuring the amount (not the level) of voltage the alternator can produce. This test can be tricky because if the alternator is weak it can still show it as producing amperage. Which is good, but if the voltage is low, it will still allow the battery to go dead. To check the amperage output of a alternator an amp meter is needed. Once the meter is connected start the engine. Next turn on all electrical accessories and raise the engine idle to about 1200 RPM. The alternator should output the max amperage it was designed to produce. Example: a 90 amp alternator should output about 88 amps. Note: An alternator can not sustain maximum output for long periods of time. If the alternator is forced to operate at maximum output it will overheat and fail. An alternator is designed to operate at max amperage output only for a reasonable amount of time.

Just take the alt out and run it to autozone. Takes all of about 15 mins tops to pull and the same to install.

Sounds to me more like you have a bad battery. If the batt has a bad cell it may charge just enough to start the motor but cause other issues. I have seen bad batteries do some crazy crap ...specially in ford's. Wipers turning on and off, blinkers, etc ...nuts.
