Whats the difference between the two and which one is better to build. Im thinking of doing the 5.3 to 6L swap within the next couple of months and was wondering which one to go with.
Thanks, Cody

The LQ9 is in the Escalades and has a bit more power to them, they also have aluminum heads, where-as the LQ4 has Iron heads I believe.

The lq9 has a higher compression ratio using flat top pistons. Although some people say their lq4 engines had flat top pistons also???
2003 Arrival Blue Silverado SS.....I just can't leave $hit alone.
If your are going to boost the motor you might want to consider the lower compression model LQ4. It will take to boost a little better.
No more trucks, but this is what I used to have. 2000 GMC Sierra, 6.0L-LQ4, Built 4L60, LS6 Cam, The Other Guys Headers, 3 inch exhaust and 7 chamber flowmaster, 43lb injectors, Nelson Tuning, Drop - 3/4 McGaughys Spindles, Bell Tech Shackles & Hangers. Best time 13.59 @ 106
most likely when i get the motor i will do a cam swap and replace the rest of the valvetrain and get an sts system with a hundred or so shot of nitrous which one would you pick?

Having aluminum heads doesnt that make it harder for the engine to detonate i have heard that somewhere and that it makes the engine run cooler.

Yeah, if you're going to boost.. the 4 is a better motor.
The 9 has stronger rods, full floating pins, different coating on the piston, flat tops, and well that's about all I can think of. It's a great N/A motor, what I'm gonna pick up.

Let's face it, the red hair... makes 'em wet.
I haven't heard of that maybe others can chime in! I know there are alot of iron headed turbo rigs out there. I think it is all head and combustion port design that makes all the difference.Originally posted by 1slow01z71@Mar 9 2005, 06:25 PM
