anyone know what a 5.3 longblock might weigh, throttle body to pan?
what might the 4.2 I-6 weigh throttle body to pan?
thanks

The six is not light. It's kinda narrow and all but much longer than a V-8. It's aluminum but is deep skirted and has cast covers, etc. The exhaust manifold is not huge and the intake is plastic so it can't be more than an LS engine.
Noone seems to know what the lil six banger weighs...im outta places to look.
Best I could find was 407 lbs. thats not bad if the 5.3 is close to 500lbs.
considering the six banger makes decent tq and hp, that 100lbs loss would be noticable in a lighter vehicle.
makes ya wonder.
yeah, but 200hp in a 400lb motor, and 300hp in a 500lb motor is a big difference. Also torque. The 6 has like what, 200? V8's got gobbs of torque. Then you add a tune, headers, cam and such. Thats a 400hp v8. Same mods on a v6 might get you 250hp. Economy is another point.
my 4.3 v6 out of my old truck weighed about 125 lbs less then my 5.3. But that 4.3 was all iron as well I believe
1951 3100
1984 C10
Don't be fooled by the factory rating on these 4200 I-6 engines. They are horribly underpowered. My 4.3 Blazer has 100 less horsepower by GM's rating than a Trailblazer and will smoke one by 87893223423 car lengths with less weight and less gear.
4200 stock rating is
275hp/275tq 2006~07 and earlier
290hp/277tq 2007-later
I think fuel economy is about the same.
If you believe the 275hp (low rating for the I-6) and believe 300hp for the 5.3, along with the lbs ratings weve concluded this far, then your talking:
.6875 hp per lbs for the I-6
.6 hp per lbs for the v-8
In all honestly, the 5.3 was rated more like 285~295, which would only further decrease the HP per LBS.
The v-8 does make more TQ but I believe the TQ for the I-6 comes on a little stronger lower in the rpm, most I-6's do but I have nothing to base this on specifically to the 4200.
Thats suprising. Youngest bro that did the recent 5.3 swap was an s-10 freak (4.3), had either trucks or blazers and not just one of each (took therapy to get him into a fullsizeDon't be fooled by the factory rating on these 4200 I-6 engines. I guess despite my best effort,, Ive been a part of an "inliners" group forever now, as much as I like the rumble of v8, I also like the idea of handing some guy running a v8 his ass on a plate with a straight six engine (american no import crap). I was just wondering though, just throwing ideas around with my bro about his nova, hes set on the 5.3/6.0 and I cant blame him, the swap into his truck was just waaaaaaaaaaaaay too easy considering, the speed bumps experienced.

yeah, good point. I know the TB I6 is a nice motor. I got off on the v6 tangent. The motors are actually nice. 4.2L I6 285HP. 15/21 mpg Might be a perfect canidate for a turbo. I know that the 2JZgtte and the RB26dett, both japanese, are both inline 6 and both great boosted motors.
