Yep you could look like this. Carrier gears driveshaft cover yoke and joints all dead.

I agree with zeake. Find a different shop all together. A couple of friends of mine that had G80s look like the carrier pic that zeake posted. I'm guessing this guy told you with regards to installing the ring gear closer to the pinion vs far away. If he "knows" what he's doing, he knows how to install gears correctly, and it won't matter how you run your vehicle.

swap in a 9.5" axle. you could get one used that has a 6 lug pattern for about the same price as a gear swap, if you do it yourself.
38" swampers, 350 tbi, 14 bolt rear, 10 bolt front
