Hughes Torque Converter - any opinions?

Not sure if Fuddle is going to honor the warranty or not, so just kind of looking ahead....

I've done a little searching on here, but thought I'd just post the question. Not many guys are running the Hughes converters, but they seem to have a solid reputation. And I can get one for right at $400 from Summit (2500 stall).

Everyone seems to like the Yanks, but the few people that DID have problems seemed to have horrible results with trying to get them to honor the warranty. So that concerns me. Price is right at $500 with shipping.

Jerry (Jerry's Transmissions) recommended Performance Torque Converters out of Kennedale, TX. Price is $500.

There are a couple others I've looked at/am looking at (Art Carr, Edge, etc.). So I'm looking for some input from you guys...

P.S. I'm not paying $900 for a P.I.

I HAVE A YANK AND THEY ARE TAKING THE BAD ONE BACK. I HAD TO BUY ANOTHER, THEY ARE GOING TO CREDIT MY ACCOUNT AS SOON AS I GET IT OUT. THE ONLY THING IS THAT I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE LABOR AND SHIPPING TO GET IT BACK TO THEM. I THINK IT IS THAT WAY WITH ALL MANU.S THOUGH.

How long did you have it before it went bad? And what went wrong with it? I would think labor would be covered under warranty. Otherwise, what&#39;s the point of the warranty.....? "We cover it, but if it breaks, you gotta pay us to build a new one"...?

I had a Hughes 2500 in my Z71, not worth it, needed a higher stall. As for the converter itself, solid. I towed with it all the time with no problems. It just didnt stall as high as advertised, get the 3k stall from them.

Wouldn&#39;t buy a hughes had one in the 84 said it was a 3000 stalled at 2200. It was a P.O.S.

I THINK 6 MOS. IT WORKS, BUT NOT TO SPECS. IT WILL ONLY BRAKE STALL TO 1500RPMS. I HAS A FLASH STALL OF 2300, BUT IT WILL ONLY FLASH AT 1900RPMS. IT IS DEFECTIVE SO THEY SAID SEND IT BACK. I HAVE A TRT 3200 HD NOW. ALLEN IS PUTTING IT IN THIS WEEK.

Keep in mind if you don&#39;t use the convertor we suggest with our build the warranty that we offer is voided. The reason for this is we know our Conv. builders warranty and we know they stand behind the product very well without any issues. lets say you use another convertor and it fails and they won&#39;t warranty their product we are both up the creek without paddles.

Understood. My dilemma (if you want to call it that) is that if the only thing wrong is the converter, I&#39;ll likely just have the converter replaced and scratch the additional cost of the tranny rebuild (for now). If and when (because I&#39;m sure I will) need the converter rebuilt, I&#39;ll definitely take it to you guys. It&#39;s kind of a money-thing right now. If I can get Fuddle to honor the warranty, and get the converter installed for problem fixed for

I&#39;m waiting on Fuddle to contact me, and I&#39;ll go from there.

Ironic....John just called me....

He said it sounds like the pulse width modulation needs to be either tuned out or install a shift kit to eliminate it.

He also said the fact that it&#39;s getting worse can eventually burn the clutch which would be evident by whether or not the paint on the torque converter is burnt. He said if it wasn&#39;t burnt, I&#39;m probably safe and can just do the above steps. But if it is burnt he&#39;ll honor the warranty.

So I&#39;m really hoping that the problem isn&#39;t as serious as originally thought.

And I know there are some posts on different forums about John and issues with his customer service, but he was very thorough in explaining the problem as well as giving me a few solutions. So my experience with John continues to be a good one.
