Well.....got to visit with the "Man" Friday. Me and a friend were headed west on Hwy 114 to go hunting in Knox City. I wasn't driving tooo fast and keeping it around 75-78. But when I was passing, it was just too much fun to not open the truck up and air it out!

I caught up to a semi carrying a load of structural steel; following was a suburban towing a trailer with 2-3 huge smoker pits on it. Wind was whipping the smoker trailer a good bit and didn't like that after seeing an accident about 45 minutes earlier involving a Dodge crew with a dog trailer.

Had a very long stretch of open road with a car coming about 3 miles out. Like I said...long stretch of road. Original plan was to ease past the burb and pull in behind the semi; Clear the oncoming car and then take the semi. I was really trying to be nice. Well...either the semi slowed down or the burb sped up because when I cleared the burb there wasn't enough room to pull in. So....I figure what the heck...there's enough room, I'll take the semi too.

Just as I clear the back of the semi I think...."Is that hwy patrol coming up?" As I get to the front of the semi, I think...."That IS hwy patrol for sure!" and he is pulling to the side of the road. I look and see that I'm going at least 95mph. I probably went over 100mph sometime during the pass. I let off and ease in front of the semi. Mr. Hwy patrol is on the side of the road, lights on, window down, flagging me over. I ease to the shoulder and initiate the "I'm about to get screwed" position. He comes up and ask for license and insurance. I'm wondering who I'm going to call to get me out of jail. He seemed to be in a decent mood given the circumstances and gave me the opportunity to explain the situation. Of course, he explained that speeding isn't acceptable even when passing.

He went back to his car and then came back with his citation book. Things were looking up! He said he was only going to give me a warning because he would have done the same thing given the situation. Wrote me a warning for speeding while passing and for.....get this; an obscured rear license plate. I still had the dealer frame that covered the "TEXAS" on plate. He asked me to come out and showed me the issue. I thanked him, shook his hand and got back on the road. I told my friend...."I'm glad he didn't walk up front or he would have probably added no front plate to the warning."

We get thru the next little town about 15 miles past the last incident. I saw the 70mph sign up front and started to ease into. About the same time, "The Man #2" comes over the rise in front of me and I am like "$hit!!!" Sure enough, I see brake lights in the rearview and ease over immediately. Again, I assume the position thinking I just got called in less than 15 minutes earlier. He comes up and informs me that the reason he pulled me over was......get this.....no front plate!!! and that the rear plate is obscured! I get a warning with no mention of speeding. HOOT!!

So guys, cover your pecker....but don't cover your license plate!

p.s. We killed lots of birds and brain cells and no encounters of the enforcement kind on the way back!

With my luck I probably would have got 2 tickets. I have also been stopped for that back plate thing. I had it from the dealer too, but on that one he gave me a warning. Then the next day, they stop me again because "the man" couldn't see me license plate at night. My truck was all dirty so i just cleaned the glass off and showed him. He was like um... then he gave me a warning for having tint to dark and that license plate covered. As soon as I got home, i ripped that damn thing off!!

Knowing my luck too....I'm suprised they didn't! The only other time I've had that kind of luck was back in '88 on Thankgiving Day. There were two cars on eastbound I-20 just past Tyler. They were driving side by side doing about 40mph yaking between the cars. I was patient for about 1.5 miles then it just plain pissed me off. Finally, a car came down the on ramp and almost ran (accidently) the car in the right lane off the road because it was going so slow. Came up on it faster than he thought. I finally got a hole and I was off. I was driving a Monte Carlo SS at the time and had it pegged at about 115mph. I had a radar detector and it didn't even beep-beep the oncoming hwy patrol. It just pegged the detector. The hwy patrol does a u-turn in the median but manages to get behind the two cars that are back side by side. Patrol had the lights/siren on but two cars don't get out of the way right away. Patrol get past them and catches me since I slowed down. Pulls me over and again I explain the situation after he clocked me at 113 in a 55. He told me about his problem with them and they were next unless they exited. He said he'd let me off but since he had citizen's patrol riding with him he had to write me up. He did cut me some slack and wrote it for only 23mph over the limit. Otherwise, he'd have to take me in. The two cars passed us about the time he finished up with me and he left and pulled them over. HA!!!! :flipoff: Fokkers! I am sure he gave them a ration of before he was done with them.
