What exactly does the controller read? Is it mainly used for tuning and are you able to use it with different tuning programs if it is used for tuning?

Ducky,

It reads the Air/Fuel ratio. I have an AEM on my truck with a single sensor after the turbo. A dual sensor can read each bank of the motor to make them run in unison with each other. These allow for better tuning. They are usually install after the cats I think?
I use mine to make sure I do not run lean under boost. If I do its bye bye motor.
