What are the drawbacks to removing the screen from the MAF? I did that a long time ago, and just recently I've been reading that it's not reccomended.

Apparently harder to tune the A/F levels. But I am no genius when it comes to tuning...only wrenching.

Sometimes, not in all cases, it screws with the maf readings and leans the vehicle out, sometimes you can get away with it, sometimes you can't.

how's yours running now that it's gone?

I've had it off for over 1k miles now, seems to be running fine. I havent heard any detonation during WOT or at any other times. It seemed to make a difference going by the SOTP but I don't know for sure, I never got a chance to take it out to the track again after I had done it. It did seem like it helped with throttle response though.

    ninetyNINE...welcome to the party!

Most of the free mods suck...hence why they are free. The two that I did were the EGR cut down in the upper intake manifold and ditch the coolant going through the TB. Keep the screen in your MAF and the EGR restictor seemed to work a bit too.

Also '99 are the most detuned of all trucks stock, suffer from false knock, and have a smaller cam than the '00+ ones. A tune would make it run like a bat out of hell compared to now.

01tunhder...I too plan to tune my box on the 30th too. Maybe I can get rid of that stupid converter lockup at 30mph!
damn i thought it was just me with the lock-up converter problem. thought something was wrong with it. if allen can fix it ill get him to do it this weekend. going tomorrow to pick up my 02 bung and have it welded in on wednesday.
cant wait to see how it runs after the tune.

Mine is lock up happy. I want to delay lockup until 40MPH and OD until 50MPH.

I think it does it for economy reasons...my AOD trans in my F-150 (before rebuilt with a TransGo shift kit) would be in 3rd by 30MPH and OD by no later than 40MPH. It was very crappy.
