I have owned my '93 for over 10 years now and not had any problems with the R4 compressor. The previous owner spent some cash converting over to R134A and it has always been a good cold A/C system. Even after converting to the 6.0 LS engine, it has been a reliable performer. I can't comment on the Sanden since I've never had one.

If you're looking to save some cash, check out this link on how to make the original R4 bracket from the old 4.3 V6 and 305/350 small block work for the LS engine. I did it and it works well.
