Hopefully, a little....well A LOT of TLC, will clean the parts right up. My plan is to get to a parts cleaner. Additionally, some degreaser and head to the local car wash with a ton of quarters! After that, begin the rebuild. I'm not looking for any crazy power numbers, I simply want the thing to be running. She ran decent before. Maybe I should have done three to four oil changes adding some ATF or marvel mystery oil in the mix. Who knows?
She'll be put together right this time around. Lastly, I need to find the torque values for the heads.

Not sure what caused the sludge. More than likely, poor oil change service intervals. Currently, the main items have been cleaned to the best the parts washer could get. I'm not looking for off the shelf new....but a good 90% of the sludge is gone.
I'll post some pics tomorrow of the progress.
    Stufe that has been cleaned:
    -cylinder heads
    -pushrods
    -oil pickup tube
    -oil pump
    -oil pan
    -rocker arms

I'll be calling the machine shop tomorrow to see what the cost is to clean the block and install new cam bearings. If it's too costly, then the pressure cleaner and mineral spirits it is.

Looks to me like someone was using Pennzoil and thought they could go 20k between changes.....

Local machine shop wants $65 to clean the block. I priced a re-ring kit at Autozone for $600!!!!! For that amount I found a replacement 4.8l on ebay and the best part is that the salvage yard its coming from is on the other side of Mobile Bay(Daphne, AL). How cool is that. Lastly, this engine is $450 and has a 6mos warranty!!! I may just end up doing this and selling off the pieces of this current 4.8l for someone who is wanting to rebuild something.
    Opinons? Thoughts? Comments? Remarks?
