I used a rotary scuff pad to clean the pistons in my LS1. I also use laquer thinner to clean parts. It cuts through grease pretty quick, and dries clean.

For the accessories I poured 2 gallons of mineral spirits in a large plastic container and scrubbed them with steel wool and a wire brush. For the block and pistons I used a wire attachment on my drill and mineral spirits in a spray bottle.
