Thread: traction question

    traction question

    So I realize that i probably shouldnt draw conclusions driving on wet pavement but it seems like traction is going to be an issue with this truck at higher horsepower levels. I've seen that some guys run cal-tracs or even traction bars. Some just run good drag radials, but how well can you make these trucks hook and still be streetable? (03 ecsb, 2500hd, 2wd... working on a sig now)

    I usually don't see any lightly modded HD's burning out too well.
    Maybe tires first.

    to my knowledge it is stock. in the dry, if i punch it from a dead stop it just lights the tires up. there is this curve i take on my way home from work about 20 mph and if i get on it about 3/4 of the way through i can get the back end to slide. in the wet i can get the tires to break completely loose on the 1-2 shift. it has 4.10's and all terrain style tires, probably cheap ones.

    are you sure both tires are spinning and its not just one tire frying, also what tires are on it? and cal tracs and traction bars are the same thing, unless youre talking about the old school ladder bars, there are plenty of traction helpers, my stock crew cab 4.8 does the same thing but im only burning one tire, i'd be suprised to see it rotating both.

    i'll bet you are right about the one tire spinning. i didnt even think about that. i thought that the hd axles had the locking differential. i'll check it out tomorrow to know for sure......i just ran the rpo codes in the glovebox and there was no mention of the g80, g81, or g86 which would be the "posi" rears iirc. thats a bummer, but on a good note, i found i have the "HVY" rpo code which is for a 2" body lift. yea thats coming off....

    Yea i wasnt sure about hd's either, i figured theyd have posi's to but if the rpo code isnt there then its prolly a one wheel peel, which means itll roast that bitch for a mile i have pretty much the same tire on my CC just a 17.

    Decent posi differential and losing the A/T tires would be a good start.

    Either find a g80/or whatever goes in an hd, that someone is selling, or get a true trac.

    well i checked it out today, (on a gravel road) and its an open rear end for sure. that explains the lack of traction i guess. i did some searching and it seems like most guys that go with the truetrac are pretty happy. as far as cost goes it is almost the same to upgrade the diff than to buy a used lsd. this mod is going to have to happen right away with winter approaching. a 1wd truck is about as useful as tits on a bull...

    how can i tell if i have a floating or semi-floating axle?
