    to my knowledge shims are used to ensure that the valve spring has the proper load at installed height. Some may need them some may not.
    2012 Ford F-150 Ecoboost Super Crew 4x4, stock and staying that way.

    This. Guys to do it to make sure all the springs are the same, or to eek a bit more life out of them after they've began to weaken.
