Imo space exploration is necesary strictly from a military standpoint. Imagine the disadvantage if we didnt have satilite surveylence and china and russia did. Not to mention the ability to fire weapons from space. Now spending billions to take better pictures of pluto? Eh i could be comvinced that that money could be better spent else where.

people are good at ruining things...what I really dont understand though is why we have yet to explore more inside the earth (deep sea, caves, faults, ect.) it would be a bit more productive then picking up rocks on the moon IMO

+1 I agree with you wholeheartedly, especially considering the controversial theories that the earth could be hollow and harbor civilizations internally. We need to stop being so damn arrogant about what we think we know and realize that we havent even scratched the surface. I can picture it now, one man discovers a unique dying life form on (let's say mars). His partner starts peeing on it, because he really had to go and was not paying attention to what the discoverer had to say. The sad part is, I actually believe that could happen.

Space exploration has pumped more technology and money into the world economy than any of you on here could possibly imagine. I worked at both Johnson Space Center and Huntsville Propulsion lab....so I was hammered on these lessons daily. Nasa has developed and lead the development on more things than just tang and freeze dried tamales. The article trys to explain the increased limitations of "element-based" life in terms of suitable habitats. What this means is that planets with a previously thought "inhabitable" environment may now have a suitable base for organisms living outside the "Big 7" base elements including our oxygen, nitrogen, carbon setup.
