Guys, the 80E is indescribably bad. It's expensive, it's heavy, it's NOT available in the salvage yards, it's inefficient, and worst of all, the ratios. Maybe ok for race-only, but nothing else. Seriously, it's just an evolution of a 1965 thing called a TH400. I've driven a 4L80E truck, it was even a 454 with 4.10:1 axle, first gear was still intolerably tall. Now, TCI does offer a 2.97:1 first, but it's over $900, NOT including installation, and it still doesn't fix fourth.
    If the 60E's ( 700R-4's ) 3.059:1 first wasn't an improvement over the TH400 / 4L80E 2.482:1 first, then how do you explain the Allison 1000 using a 3.10:1 first, and the new 6L80E using a 4.027:1 first?
Strength matters, but NOT MORE than ratios.

80E's are very abundant in recycle centers
They are not any more expensive than 60E's
They only weight a 100lbs or so more than a 60E
And they are a ton stronger!

A stock 80E will handle more power and abuse then the best Built 60/65/70E out there. The gearing seems like it would be beneficial for towing since that's what GM uses in most of their light duty towing packages. Never seen a 60E in any of the 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. Maybe Im missing something here.

    I had a fully built *** level 1 billion 70E and it lasted a whole 2 weeks behind 500rwhp. What a joke!!!

I'm not going racing with 500 HP, I'm towing with 311.6 ft-lbs of torque.

After having an FLT and switching to an 80 I don't think I can really agree with either the seriously bad comment or the ratios matering more than strength comments. I agree with Jon's comments above. And unless you wanna swap trans stuff out every month or so, strength is certainly at least a big of a player as ratios. It may be an apples to oranges comparison however as most people on here seem more concerned with straigh-line performance versus towing issues.

This did not help your cause on this forum. You just proved how idiotic you are. Just bacause a trans is "rated" to something doesn't mean it can actually handle it. The 4L60e was meant to be used in a sub 4000 pound car, not a 14,000 lb load.

So you spent all the time and money swapping a 14 bolt axle into a v6 truck so you could tow more. Now you're going to spend more money to buy a built trans, and then swap a 6.0 in it. You SHOULD have sold the 1/2 ton and bought a 3/4 ton and been done with it. You chose the hard way of doing things, taking a 1/2 ton and making it a 3/4 ton with a 1/2 ton frame...LOL

I nearly sold this truck, before the mods started, and bought a DuraMax dually. But after a lot of figuring, keeping this truck, even with mods, comes out ahead. This one, pure stock, was already adequate for the trailer. The slide-in camper was slightly too much, hence the axle upgrade. But it was also for gearing. I'm happy with the results.
The camper spreads the weight all along the frame rails, rather than isolated overstressing like too much trailer / tongue ( pin ) weight would, so no problem there. I don't need the LQ9, but I got it for $250, from a guy who got laid off and got desperate. At that price, why keep the V6?
Last night I got scaled. The pickup by itself, with very little fuel in it. 4650#, so figure 4700 with the V8. The trailer, dry is 5100. And a stock 60E is rated by GM to 13,500 combined. I'm within all my ratings, except a tiny fudge on GVWR with the camper, but the rear brake upgrade and load range E tires offset that. Where's the problem?

You believing different things after unrelated experiences doesn't make me an idiot.

Your arguments make no sense at all. You ask questions then when you get answers you act like people helping you don't know what they are talking about. You are
In need of something you won't be able to get on this forum.
