Want to swap '97 into '07 - 09 Suburban

I have 300,000 uneventful, almost repair free miles on the 350 in my 97. The transmission is a totally different story. My father-n-law had a 2005 and it was alwas in the shop with excessive oil use. People I know with even newer models have had a lot of trouble with their engines too. Up until very recently, my '97 might use a pint of oil between oil changes and still gets 16 MPG overall combined, tank in and tank out. Better than my friends get with theirs. My mechanic doesn't like or give as good a review on the newer engines and fuel systems either. I need a newer body and interior and other things that buying a newer model would give me. But I'm weary of getting newer, different problems. Thanks for all the great input and advice!

I have a 'newer engine and trans' 170k on the clock...I beat on mine daily, a set of tires lasts me about 6 months. I mud it, I tow with it, I race with it. I am sitting on 36" tires, get 16mpg, which beats my buddys COMPLETELY STOCK 97. He has problems with his distributor ALL THE TIME. He gets 14mpg...and he is SLOW. I um...had to change a headlight one time....and a $60 oxygen sensor. Think the alternator went out like 5 years ago.


All my friends swear on old TBIs and Carbs, but my truck is one we're always taking to get parts when there's doesn't run ;-)

LS style motors are hardly new. They've been out since what? 98? Thats a good 12 years of testing. Sorry, but your "mechanic" is an idiot. The only reason he says the newer ones have more problems is because he doesn't know how to work on them.
