    96 chevy, which trannys interchange?

my friend has a 96 chevy 4x4, he bought a used transmission from a salvage yard but after getting it home it looks like it is out of a 99 or newer truck as it has the bellhousing that goes all the way around the flywheel instead of having the dust cover on the bottom like the old one did, what trannys will interchange with these trucks? how do we tell what year the new tranny is?

95-98 will swap in. The 99 and newer body style use's a different length housing and will not work with the stock convertors.
