4.8 with a manual

Ive found a truck for sale with a 4.8 5-speed that i have been considering but Ive just never seen much about the manuals on here before. Are they a very good transmission? Like able to hold more power than a 60e? and what exactly is the name of the manuals offered in the 4.8s its an 05.

The stock 5 speeds cannot hold very much power at all. I think there called the nv3500. Basically there good enough for stock and that's about it. I wanted a manual truck, so I bought a 4.8 5 speed manual truck, and one of the first things I did was change it out for a t56 (6 speed) tranny. They come in the ws6 and as camaros. And in the vettes, but u can't use the one out of vettes in our trucks because in vettes the tranny is mounted to the rear axle basically. Regardless though the t56 can hold up to about 500hp. When I bought mine I had a couple of things done to it so it's good up to about 750-800.

you don't see many on here because just about everybody here races their trucks not only is it not the strongest trans around, but it ain't got the best gearing for racing.

that said - i love mine & won't buy another automatic if i can help it. it also ain't as weak as some people make it out to be (mostly auto guys anyway). i've only had it behind my 5.3 for a couple months, but i've talked to others who've paired it to 5.3s, 6.0s, built 350s, 454s, and even an 8.1. so long as you don't beat it to death, it'll be fine. heck - even the S/C joe gibbs 4.8 came with the nv3500 & it made 390hp/425lb-ft and a warranty. if you're going for a big-power build (& don't mind 2WD only), a T56 is a better choice, but for a DD with mild power, it's perfectly fine. i say go for it!

Thanks guys i apprectiate the input. I had never heard anything about them but now i'll be able to go a lil deeper and see what eles i can find out. I knew that some of the RST silverados came with 5speeds but i didnt know the gibbs trucks did. I have a buddy with a Gibbs truck, automatic but Ive never really looked deep into it to see what all i did have.

I'm rocking one, 2 things I dont like about it, the mile long shift throw and the wicked drop in the 2-3 shift

Are you rocking the stock 5 speed? You got to get a short throw shift kit for that thing so its not such a long throw. I put a hurst one in mine when it was stock with the 5 speed. They dont "technically" make one for our trucks, but one of the guys at my local speed shop hooked me up with one that worked perfect for my truck. I can look up the part number if ya want

hurst used to make one - up til fall 08, i believe. i called them asking about it a couple summers ago & they told me they had one but were discontinuing it.

i feel ya on the 2-3 shift though
i thing 02+ should be able to do the drill mod
