the 5.3 HO crate motors are puttin like 350 at the fly with a edelbrock intake/holley carb...

I would think cam/heads/ud/headers/good tune should be able to put 400 at wheels no problem if done right. Can't imagine THAT much is lost through drivetrain
blown transmissions are about as useful as 97% of the guys on this forum

    Stock truck intake, 11.5:1, p&p heads, 236/240 .615/.615 112lsa, lt's, dual 3" exhaust made 398rwhp on my truck through a very loose 3800-4000 converter.

Cam only with long tubes and 2.5" duals I made 350rwhp with a 221/221 .567 112lsa with stock verter.

400 is doable but you're gonna spend some money gettin there

I've got some family in Bastrop and surrounding areas that drag race. The 5.3 is plenty tough and can be bored out to 3.90" so I'd shoot for that with a 4" stroker crank for a 383 LSX. 400hp should be a walk in the park...

swap out some flat top 4.8 pistons,
find set of used 243 heads and have them milled a little
    healthy cam
    long tubes and full exhaust

i wanna see how much i can make the 5.3 put to the wheels without boring and without any power adders. yes a 6.0 would be a quick way there and i may do that, i have a 2500 that i could do a motor swap in and have a 6.0 IF i ever decide to go that rough. my tuner has a 6.0 in a reg cab making 380/380 to the wheels (his "work" truck) has ls6 intake, 220/220 cam,LT's, K&N intake, Efans ,and tuned . we'll see how things go, i MAY go with a bigger cam but for now i wanna try this one. thanks for all the input tho lots of good ideas

I only made 330 to the wheels but ran 12.3 with a 5.3 in a rcsb.
