i totally agrea with that got one on the way myself with alot more to deal with also but im still going to peice together my v8 swap. like the johny cash song one piece at a time. i think the ls6 is a good starting point. if they run it in a stock motor with a stock trans u should be able to also. the first things i would do is headers and exaust with a cai, e-fans and tune. saw write ups about those cheap ones on ebay.
