    Is this a 5.3 or 4.8

    Hello,
I'm new here and I already check in and said hello. Anyway, I had this engine that someone gave me and I was wondering is it a 5.3 or 4.8 because on the block it says both. I heard that the piston could tell you what it is so here is a pics of the pistons.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Can't view your pic, but if it's dished it should be 5.3, and if it's flat top then should be 4.8....

There's the odd chance that it's an HO 5.3, it will have flat tops, but the block is also alumnium so thats kind of a giveaway

Yup, its a 5.3L. Lucky you - the 5.3L has a WAY better torque band than the 4.8L. CHARGE IT !!!

Well I'm into classic cars and trucks and I done some metal fab for someone and he could not pay me and he told me I could have the motor for my project if I wanted it. I building a 55 chevy truck and it may go in that I doing some research if I want to use the motor our not. He gave me the motor and trans and harness. The truck will be low and mean looking so I was going to build a 383 stroker with a thumper cam for it. Its got to sound mean so I need to research cams and things like that for the ls engine. I'm leaning towards a 383 stroker because I know and understand that engine, but I have to see whats up the the LS series. I have the 350 block I'm using for the 383 and now I have this 5.3 so I guess I'm going to tell the guy ok and let him off the hook for the money.

You can use the flat tops from a 4.8L to bump up the compression ratio a bit.
This is the place to learn about LS engines in a truck for sure.

budget 383 SBC dont produce the stock power level of some of the GEN III and GEN IV motors produce

the 5.3 can be made into a 382 if needed.

thats an older 5.3 isnt it? pre 02?
