Heraclitus is famous for the remark attributed to him, “You cannot step in the same river twice.” The remark raises the important philosophical problem of identity or “sameness over change”: Can today’s river and yesterday’s river be the same, since not a single drop of water in yesterday’s river is in today’s river?
