Depends on what you want and what you're building it for...The way I figured it was that I already had the 5.3 and my builder will charge around $200-300 to bore it which was cheaper than buying a 6.0 block and having prep work done on it. Then you just have to buy pistons for the 5.7. You can reuse rods and crank. If you're on a budget, it's not a bad way to go.

You'll need pistons, bearings, rings, heads (compression will be too high with stock truck heads, I went with 317's).

hmmm... what if the rods, and crank are 170k miles old? LOL

    pistons? brand? or stocker ls6s
bearings wise... Clevite or Federal Mogul? or stock?
    rings? stockers?

i think i know someone that has a set of ls1 heads, would those be plenty good or try to get 317s?

If you are wanting to go forged with a 6.0 or the 5.7, it's the same. What I mean by that is you would have to buy forged parts for both so the cost is pretty much equal. The only difference being if you already have the block or if you have to buy one.

Pistons you can go with Diamond, Wiseco, Probe....
    Bearings - Clevite or Federal
    Rings - Don't skimp...Total Seal's are good
Heads - 317's will give you lower compression than the LS1's.

What are you building this for? N/A, nitrous or F/I? That makes a big difference as to what parts to put in it.

I have been Planing to do the bore thing w/ my 5.3 and from what i understand running w/ the 5.3 heads would have a compression of around 10.8..

I have the iron ls1 in my truck and built it by myself. I used stock rods and pistons from a ls1 and my stock 5.3 crank. I have the prc 5.3 heads and my motor runs damn good. Have ran a best of 8.3 in 1/8 mile soo far in a rcsb z71.

Go with the 5.7. I would do rods too. But stock crank is ok. Find some ls6 or lq9 heads and a nasty cam

could a 5.3 be turned into a 383? if so how many quarts of oil n such would you need?
