    I had some on my old rims and they were great tires. Seemed to get 35-40k miles out of them.

    Yep, get some good tires and smoke them off until there below 3/32 tread depth and voila! Home made slicks, you have to start with relatively sticky tires to begin with though, just want that tread gone.
