    Smile 200 amp alternator is it worth putting in?

    i have a powermaster 200 amp alternator my qeustion is it worth putting in if it drains more horsepower when it engages or is the extra amperage worth it and why . any info would be helpful. i have plans to doing a trans cooler with a built in fan and electric twin fan for my main cooiling system. the engine is a LQ-9 ......thanx

    It will not draw any more power than the stock alternator. It is just the way the coils are wound to get more power out of it.
    Step 1. crus at it.
    Step 2. get a hammer.
    Step 3. torch it.

    The main thing you pick up and need from bigger alternator is
    not the max output

    but the output at idle.........

    160amp alt may put out 70amps at idle
    while a 200amp puts out more like 100.

    The 160 would more than cover your load, but only at 2,000 rpm+
    at idle it may be at it limit and you get dimming headlines and such.
