    Lightbulb Boring vs Stroker

I have been throwing some ideas in my head about a build that may or may not take place. I saw an lq9 iron block for under 800 brand spankin new on jegs. So i thought, wouldnt it be cool to build an engine from the ground up and put it in my truck. I was thinkin 383 or 408 in displacement but not sure exactly how to get it there. What are the pros and cons of boring v stroking or some good combinations? Goal would be around 600 tq under 4000rpm N/A on 87 for convenience. Is this feasible, I am kind of a at this. Thanks

probably not possible. 600 tq is alot, especially with 87. 408 takes a 6.0 block like you saw on Jegs Bored .030 over and a 4'' stroke crank. most 383 kits ive seen use the 5.3 blocks. not positive the stroke and bore. you could do a 500 hp build on 87 octane with a good motor maybe. but if you want that much torque, might want to look at diesel.

383's are 4'' stroke and 3.898 or somewhere around there for bore.. actually I think thats more in the range of 388. Uses the 5.3l block. I researched it a while back, can't remember the exact numbers

You can make a 383 with a 6.0 block as well. Search over on tech

    the 383 6.0 is a custom piece

a typical 383 uses a 5.7 to start off with. yes ppl use 5.3 blocks but first bore them to the specs of a 5.7. to achieve a 383 you need a 4" crank 6.125 rods
since you dont start off with a 350 and bore it to 355 youll only get i believe 382. a 355 with conversion is more 385

87 octane you say....so you wnat to skimp on things for a 5 dollar difference between fill ups?

408 with 600 tq isnt happening. THese are LS motors they dont make torque!!!!!!!! to get torque you need boost. Even some of the baddest 408s arent making 525rwtq

So really boring out to 383 would be realistic going for around 450 hp, unless you're boosting?

500 would be fine then. According to the GMPP website, the crate 383 can make 457 at 3400 carb'd. I thought that higher numbers would be easier with a 408. Not trying to skimp out on anything, just thought it would be interesting from an engineering stand point to pull it off with 87. 93 it is then.

If the 408 bore is .030 more than the 6.0, what can be gained/lost from boring it .040 with the same 4" stroke.

    figure it out with this
    Engine Size and Compression Calculator

6.0 block has a 4.000" bore and the combustion chamber is 72cc's stroker crank is 4.00inches

the biggest I think you you can go with a 6.0 block is 414 which is .060 over with the 4" crank. you could go bigger, but it would be too costly for what you will use it for. if you want a tq monster look into strapping a blower onto an lq4, and the blower setup will cost about the same or less then the stroker package with the cam and heads to support it.
