Thread: Converting from 4wd to AWD Driveshaft?

Converting from 4wd to AWD Driveshaft?

Well The question is if I convert to AWD from the autotrac transfer case will i need a different drive shaft. I don't think i will but my tech says ask to be sure.
Also if anyone has ever done this swap what will I need to do or unplug so the service 4wd light wont stay on. I know the Transfer case control module is under the dash. I plan to disconnect it. Will I need to do anything else?

Thanks in advance for the help.

you'll need both the front and rear driveshafts because the front is shorter and the rear is longer

I would have never guessed they were different. Not sure why they would be but if someone else has done the swap then maybe so....then again a 12-bolt after 1977 =

The SERVICE 4WD message will be on all the time with or without the TCCM unplugged.

I'll find out. I am going to convert. I just dont wanna have to have 2 diff shafts built and buy the front dif and axles from an ss. That would suck.

Not sure if HPT or EFIL can cull out TCCM and IPC DTC's.

If you leave the TCCM plugged in and you have a TC with no encoder the TCCM will set a crap load of DTC's and request the IPC turn on the message. If you unplug the TCCM the IPC will know the TCCM is no longer on the data bus and display the message on its own.
