Loud rattling coming from underside of truck!

My truck is making a hellacious noise underneath, and it's not a u-joint on the drive shaft. I can rock the yoke that slips into the back of the transfer case a little bit so I figured it was the output bearing. Am I on the right track? can someone explain how to replace this bearing?

There is no bearing there. It's just a bushing the yoke rides in. Some play is normal there. If it's excessive, most times you'll have a pretty good leak.

You probably need to run it SAFELY in the air to isolate the source.

How do you know it's not a u-joint?

There doesn't seem to be a leak. I would think it wasn't the u-joints. I just replaced them last year with spicer u-joints. What else could it be?

Rear axle, transfer case, transmission, catalytic converter loose in side, etc.

The 4wd system still works just fine, so I hope it wouldn't be the transfer case. I just see dollars going away if it is.

The transfer case overhaul is most times cheaper than the transmission....sometimes cheaper than the rear axle. Just depends on what is wrong.

I looked underneath there today and found that my pinion seal on the rear axle is leaking. No movement in the u-joints but there still is the loose rattle/grinding when I drive. I'm thinking my pinion bearing is worn out probably from some dirt getting in there. Would anyone agree?
