Hey Allen, just want to know what exactly is going into your tranny build.. I'm considering a budget build up, and would like some insight on which parts a critical and which are not.. So far I'm planning for a transgo SK, Billet intermediate servos, and a Jet 9-puck clutch pack... I read that the 3rd gear on the 4L60E's is especially weak with the stock 6-puck clutch pack. Could that be related to your problem, or do you know for sure that it's the sprag??

Well, I just found out what the screeching noise is, well, i think i found it, becuause ever since i got the new shaft in, my trans doesn't (or i thought it was the trans) make that noise any more, I was thinking maybe it was the driveshaft.
So, maybe joe and i will just go thru the trans and see what it looks like and replace the worn parts, i don't think it is the sprag anymore.
You are right , the third gear in the 60e's are weak. The 6pack you have is probably that fancy carbon stuff, i heard those grab like a SOB, are very strong, but are very unforgiving, I know they are also supposed to hold better than the 9 pack too. Last time i tried the 6pack i spun them in two days, but don't get discouraged, that's when i was having all that tranny trouble and was having someone else do the rebuilds, sooooo, that was the problem, not the 6pack clutch pack. So, i'm sure you'll be fine.
The planetary gear is also something that is kind of weak, this gear setup is holding you entire truck when you take off, i can't remember if we have the 4gear planetary setup and the 5gear is the upgrade or is it 3gear then upgrade to four, i'm pretty sure the 5gear is it, but the higher number is the better one.
You're also going to hear a lot of debate about these little springs that go around the clutch pack, some manuals say leave them off, some say leave them on, just for your info, mine are off, and i trust joe's expertise, plus the tranny is still badass so , i guess it speaks for itself.
I don't even think these little springs, (like 5 of them) even fit with the 6pack clutch pack.
here's what is in my trans:
all of the metal rings in my trans are hardened metal, i have the hardened input shaft and supposedly a better shell (but it looks stock to me), a set of HP clutches for 3rd gear (9pack), carbon style hi po 2/4 band, vette servo, some valvebody work, and worked pump, the shift kit: well just the springs that give you a good shift, and importantly, the reverse springs and plungers that come with the kit.
Just a tip: whenever you are taking off from a light or rolling slowly and floor it, make sure you put it down into first gear, becuase when you do, all of the forward parts are engaged and not just a little tiny gear, you'd be like wtf, that's the only thing moving my truck forward!!
you can then put it into second before it hits that shift speed, and then after that, you'll be fine to put it up into drive or 3rd, or just shift it manually.
I know most of use don't do that, lol, but it's just good practice if you want your tranny to last longer, however some trannies last a long time anyway.
hope this helps,
allen
btw, i'm still planning of doing the video, just need some time, and i need to get some stuff fixed on my truck first, ds, ac, etc.

Sooo, are you saying I should keep my stock 6-pack clutch or step up to the 9-pack?? I'd of course like to keep my spending at a minimum, but if I'm going to do it I want to do it all at once, so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.. BTW, my truck doesn't make anywhere near the amount of power yours does, so this is more of a preventive measure than a necessity... Now let's see those video's...

ah, i see what you're asking now, the stock pack i believe are a 9 clutch pack set. The 6 clutch pack pieces are thicker to compensate for the loss of number of discs. When i tore mine apart, the stock had a 9 clutch pack, and i purchased the high performance 6 clutch pack.
If you just want to replace the weak parts, i'd say this:
Like you said - shift kit
billet server is good too
you can go with the 9 pack or 6 pack clutches, if you want some good inexpensive stuff, check out transmissioncenter.net , get the 9 pack hi po clutch set.
the borg warner set part 14
replace the stock 2/4 band for the hi po one- part 11x
maybe a bigger trans oil pan too part 16x
good luck

Whoops, when I was reading the info about the 9-pack upgrade it said something about the stock clutch being 6-pack. I guess you can't believe everything you read.. Anyway, thanks for the help.. Definitely going with the 9-pack hi-po upgrade, billet servo, transgo, and 2/4 band... Not sure about the tranny pan. I guess it all depends on how much $$$ I've got left over..
Thanks again.
